Topology Discovery on Unicast Networks: A Hierarchical Approach Based on End-to-End Measurements

چکیده
In this paper we address the problem of topology discovery in unicast logical tree networks using endto-end measurements. Without any cooperation from the internal routers, topology estimation can be formulated as hierarchical clustering of the leaf nodes based on pair-wise correlations as similarity metrics. We investigate three types of similarity metrics: queueing delay measured by sandwich probes, delay variance measured by packet pairs, and loss rate measured also by packet pairs. Unlike previous work which first assumes the network topology is a binary tree and then tries to generalize to a non-binary tree, we provide a framework which directly deals with general logical tree topologies. Based on our proposed finite mixture model for the set of similarity measurements we develop a penalized hierarchical topology likelihood that leads to a natural clustering of the leaf nodes level by level. A hierarchical algorithm to estimate the topology is developed in a similar manner by finding the best partitions of the leaf nodes. Our simulations show that the algorithm is more robust than binary-tree based methods. The three types of similarity metrics are also evaluated under various network load conditions using ns-2.

The IP service model retains its simplicity and robustness by deferring reliability and congestion control to higher layers through end-to-end transport protocols. While the IP uni-cast service has proven successful, extending end-to-end adaptation to multicast has been a diicult problem. Unlike the unicast case, multicast protocols must support large and heterogeneous receiver sets. While prop...

| Current Internet transport protocols make end-to-end measurements and maintain perconnection state to regulate the use of shared network resources. When a number of such connections share a common endpoint, that endpoint has the opportunity to correlate these end-to-end measurements to better diagnose and control the use of shared resources. A valuable characterization of such shared resource...

Network tomography refers to the inference of characteristics of internal links in a network using end-to-end measurements. The link characteristics of interest include packet loss rate, delay, and bandwidth; here we focus on loss rate. Depending only on end-to-end measurements is convenient in the context of the Internet because network operators such as ISPs offer limited visibility into the ...

Nowadays, the growing demand for supporting multiple applications causes to use multiple IPs onto the chip. In fact, finding truly scalable communication architecture will be a critical concern. To this end, the Networks-on-Chip (NoC) paradigm has emerged as a promising solution to on-chip communication challenges within the silicon-based electronics. Many of today’s NoC architectures are based...

In Application layer multicast (ALM) also called Overlay Multicast, multicast-related functionalities are moved to end-hosts. The key advantages, overlays offers, are flexibility, adaptability and ease of deployment [1]. Application layer multicast builds a peer-to-peer (P2P) overlay multicast tree topology consisting of end-to-end unicast connections between end-hosts. End users self organize ...
